Modelling the consequences of duck migration patterns on the genetic diversity of aquatic organisms: a first step towards a predictive tool for wetland management

چکیده
We have developed a spatially explicit modelling framework that links duck migration patterns with gene transport. The model is individual-based and simulates the journey of a duck from migration start locations through stopover sites to breeding or wintering sites. We investigate two different migration strategies: ‘hopper’ (where the bird makes many stopovers) and ‘jumper’ (where the bird makes few stopovers). The migration model is linked to a genetics model calculating gene frequency changes based on propagule deposition for potential duck landing sites along the European migration pathways. We present the results of a sensitivity analysis relating flight characteristics of several duck species to the resulting pattern of potential gene spread. The modelling framework is designed to develop hypotheses on the likely impact of duck migration on genetic diversity of aquatic organisms; and the predictions are discussed in relation to future empirical research and subsequent model development. © 2002 Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS. Application of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) as a molecular marker in the study of genetic diversity of aquatic populations
Genetic diversity is one of the important and essential characteristics of any population for its survival. The study of genetic variation in different populations of aquatic organisms is of particular importance in order to protect, stabilize and manage their stocks. Based on studies conducted in recent years, molecular markers have proven that they can be used as indicators of the genetic div...

Phytoplankton is one of the main components of wetlands, which plays a vital role in providing nutrients, oxygen for other organisms, stabilizing nitrogen and carbon dioxide. In the meantime, the current status of Lake Urmia highlights the need to conserve and protect wetlands related to these ecosystems and their living and non-living components. Therefore, this study was conducted to assist i...

Wetlands are key habitats connected physically and socially with processes occurring over a much wider territory. The biotic connection through dispersal mechanisms among wetlands is of primary importance to wetland management and policies. متن کاملGenetic variation and structure of Alburnoides Nicolausi (Bogutskaya and Coad, 2009) in the Joushan and Houzian rivers (Lorestan Province)
Alburnoides nicolausi is one of the freshwater, benthopelagic species with high ecological importance. This fish is native to Iran and found in the basin Tigris. Considering the lack of information on population genetics of A. nicolausi, the genetic diversity and structure of this valuable species was studied in the present research. For this, A. nicolausi samples were collected from Joushan an...

Following the report of suckermouth catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus) from Anzali Wetland, the present study was conducted to review the biological and ecological characteristics of this species and its effects on aquatic ecosystems. A literature review revealed that the suckermouth catfish is native to South America and one of the most popular species in the ornamental fish industry. This speci...
